What Is Your Purpose?

A question you should be asking...

You will probably ask yourself this question multiple times in your lifetime. Sometimes it can make us feel very weighed down or stressed because we don’t know what the answer is and we feel like we’re running out of time or we aren’t satisfied where we are…which is why we’re asking this question in the first place.

I went through this recently when I didn’t like my current job and I felt like I wasn’t doing what I was called to do. Luckily, God saw my misery and opened a door for a better job doing what I love. I thought there was nothing better. After two interviews, I got an email saying they decided to hire someone else. I was pretty upset, a little hurt, and decently confused. God changed my heart so much so that I’m actually glad he took me through this trial. I prayed, “God, I would rather be in Your will doing something that I don’t like compared to doing what I love and be outside of Your will.”

It’s so important for us to realize that where we just might be where God wants us to be. It is possible that we can do things outside of his will or choose to follow our own path, but that’s why God has us in the places he has us in; to grow our faith, mature us, and ultimately to make us look more like Him. Philippians 2:13 NLT says, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” Don’t be afraid if you have all these lofty hopes and dreams, God may use those desires to shape you and make you to be who He has called you to be. However, our desires shouldn’t be purposed for our own glory but for the glory of God. So at the end of the day, we need to lay those same hopes and dreams at the feet of Jesus.

Google definition: Purpose – the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

Isaiah 43:7, “Everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, Whom I have formed, even whom I have made…” So according to Isaiah, we are created for His glory; that is our purpose. Ephesians 1:11, “Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for He chose us in advance, and He makes everything work out according to His plan.” Even if we don’t feel like we’re in the right place, or we face a tragedy in our lives, God is so good at working it all out for His glory.

We are called to live separate from the world, because we are not of this world. We became a new creation when we believed Christ and our job on earth became to make others hunger for God. When it comes to finding out what we should be doing or what career path to take, one of the best things we can do is to “be still and know that he is God…” Psalm 46:10. Take the time to listen to God’s direction and don’t be afraid to follow your dreams unless you know they don’t align with God’s heart. As you follow your dreams God will direct your paths…it might get difficult sometimes because God likes to take us out of our comfort zone and mold us, but “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.” (James 1:2) Finding your “destiny” or knowing your future can be a difficult thing sometimes, but if you stay with the Lord; seeking and praying, He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5 and 6 NLT, “Trust in the lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” Just remember, it’s a long journey with a lot of prayer, growing pains, and maturing but we can rejoice knowing it is all for His glory and our benefit.
